An Open Letter to Columbia University

I am joining the community of Columbia University and Barnard College alumni, families, and students pledging to donate one dollar, and no more, to our university for the foreseeable future—not in anger, but in sadness and in hope. I cannot in good conscience stand by idly while my university refuses to take all necessary steps to end antisemitism on campus and fails to unequivocally call out the barbarity of Hamas, whose evil actions are not only directed at the people of Israel but also the civilians of Gaza each and every day.

I call upon Columbia University to stand on the right side of history, against hate, and foster a climate that brings our community together rather than drives us apart. Right now, Jewish students across the country believe they will not be safe until there is massive public pressure or after there is tragedy on campus. This is unacceptable. The One Dollar Pledge tells Columbia University that our community will not stand for it.

Through our
advocacy, we want to inspire Columbia’s moral courage.

Donations are vital to the university for many reasons. They add up. They provide valuable feedback to the university. They build a pipeline. And they inspire others. So please join me in pledging to donate one dollar to send a crucial message to the university and the world that antisemitism on campus will not be tolerated—with the hope that we can one day return to giving to the school that once provided an unparalleled education to so many.
